Being one of the largest academic units of its kind in the world, the Institute possesses a great deal of expertise in such areas such as textile technology, textile chemistry, apparel technology, fashion and textile design, textile management, quality management, marketing and merchandising, and fashion retailing. The management of the Institute believes that the integration of complementary areas of expertise facilitates the further development of its research competencies, and considers the formation of research groups to be an important mechanism for such integration. To this end, most of the research activities within the Institute are grouped into the following main research areas.

Fashion and Textile Design

New technology and design education; fashion and textile design and development; pattern design technology; design and marketing input to designer labels; cultural and related factors influencing fashion.

Textile and Apparel Materials and Products

Structure and properties of new materials; objective evaluation techniques; micro-mechanical study of textile structures; high-performance textile and apparel products; smart technology for textiles & apparel; and sensory engineering.

Textile and Apparel Technology

Textiles manufacturing technology; intelligent apparel manufacturing; CAD/CAM in textiles and clothing; sizing systems for clothing; 3D body scanning technology; apparel manufacturing knowledge base; apparel production technology and management; clothing comfort; clothing functional design, and apparel product development.

Textile Chemistry Processing and Colour Technology

Innovative textiles colouration, finishing and printing; colour evaluation and communication technology; nanotechnology in functional textile surface treatment; eco-friendly dyeing; and the evaluation and treatment of pollution.

Marketing, Retailing and Management

International trade of textiles and clothing; marketing, merchandising and management of fashion and textile firms; fashion retailing; and fashion/apparel consumers, consumption and branding studies.
