Work-Integrated Education (WIE)

Design of the WIE Component

Starting from the triennium 2005/2008, all students have to take "WIE" programme (Work Integrated Education) as a compulsory training.

It takes the form of industrial placement/internship with duration of a minimum of 3 weeks or 120 hours. Such mandatory training must be taken place within the 3-year course of study before graduation.

The WIE requires industry-based learning experiences to take place in an organizational context relevant to students' future profession in garment & textiles industry.

The job nature and activities of the placements which are structured and measurable learning experience within the relevant industry are designed by the partnered companies.

Learning Objectives

Aiming at developing all round students with professional competence, WIE is a good opportunity to provide real life work experience for students to develop a range of generic abilities.

Students are able to apply their knowledge and problem-solving skill to handle and tackle actual problems at work.

The emphasis is put on providing guidance to students through work-based learning and assess the learning outcomes of the work-based experience.

Strategies for Supporting Learning in the Workplace

Students are required to initiate and formulate a training proposal/learning agreement before the placement.

If students prefer to have their placement recommended by the Department, they should state their expectation and provide their curriculum vitas for the Department to locate suitable placements for them.

The WIE working team will help students to search for suitable WIE placements from the industry. The team will try to build up a pool of such organizations to facilitate the WIE arrangement. Major criteria for such placements would include job nature, training type, people to work with and the safety level of the working environment.

Students are welcome to contact the WIE working team which consists the Specialism Coordinator of each specialism and the WIE coordinator for advice and support.

The WIE working team will keep in touch with students throughout the placement to ensure proper counseling and consultation are provided.

Procedure

Before the placement
  • All students have to submit WIE application form to the WIE
coordinator. They can choose to seek for their own placements or
request for recommendations by the Department. Curriculum vitas
have to be provided if recommendations of placements are needed.
  • Learning Agreement is also required to be sent to the WIE
coordinator by students, which help to ensure that intended
    learning objectives are set properly.
**If you are not sure whether the placement which sourced by yourself can fulfil our requirement, please seek for our advice.
During the placement
  • Once the placement starts, Work Objective is prepared by the field
work supervisors of the partnered companies, which are sent to the
students via the WIE coordinator. These serve to provide students
with their specific role and intended learning outcomes on their
    placements.
After the placement
  • Students should pass the Final Assessment form to work supervisors for providing appraisal on their performance. The final assessment form is designed to provide assessment of the attainment of intended outcomes and feedback to students.
  • At the same time, students have to complete Self Assessment form to reflect their learning experience during the placement/internship.
  • For students who will apply grant and loan have to submit Graduation-tied Placement Income Report, which is to report their income earned from the initial 30 hours of placement/internship to the Student Financial Assistance Agency.

**Students have to submit all of the above forms to the WIE co-ordinator for processing of grading.

Assessment of the WIE placement

Appraisals are prepared by the field work supervisors who provide comments on students' performance during the placement. Basic and generic competency in workplace will be assessed. Feedback are provided to students

A "PASS" or "FAIL" grade is recommended by the academic supervisors subsequently.

Students are required to pass the WIE placement in order to be able to graduate.
