Work-Integrated Education (WIE)
Design of the WIE Component
Starting from the triennium 2005/2008, all students have to take "WIE" programme (Work Integrated Education) as a compulsory training.
It takes the form of industrial placement/internship with duration of a minimum of 3 weeks or 120 hours. Such mandatory training must be taken place within the 3-year course of study before graduation.
The WIE requires industry-based learning experiences to take place in an organizational context relevant to students' future profession in garment & textiles industry.
The job nature and activities of the placements which are structured and measurable learning experience within the relevant industry are designed by the partnered companies.
Learning Objectives
Aiming at developing all round students with professional competence, WIE is a good opportunity to provide real life work experience for students to develop a range of generic abilities.
Students are able to apply their knowledge and problem-solving skill to handle and tackle actual problems at work.
The emphasis is put on providing guidance to students through work-based learning and assess the learning outcomes of the work-based experience.
Strategies for Supporting Learning in the Workplace
Students are required to initiate and formulate a training proposal/learning agreement before the placement.
If students prefer to have their placement recommended by the Department, they should state their expectation and provide their curriculum vitas for the Department to locate suitable placements for them.
The WIE working team will help students to search for suitable WIE placements from the industry. The team will try to build up a pool of such organizations to facilitate the WIE arrangement. Major criteria for such placements would include job nature, training type, people to work with and the safety level of the working environment.
Students are welcome to contact the WIE working team which consists the Specialism Coordinator of each specialism and the WIE coordinator for advice and support.
The WIE working team will keep in touch with students throughout the placement to ensure proper counseling and consultation are provided.
